The Jean Beliveau Auction- February 2005

500 goals! The benchmark first established by Maurice Richard for goal-scoring excellence and which all great goal scorers aim for once it's within striking distance, was reached by Jean Beliveau during a memorable night in February of 1971. The date was the 11th of February and the place was the Montreal Forum. Beliveau scored the Canadiens' first 3 goals with the 3rd being #500. History was made at 6:42 of the 2nd period, when Belveau took a drop pass from Phil Roberto, deked Minnesota goaltender Gilles Gilbert and slid the puck home to join Richard, Howe and Hull in the elusive 500-goal club. Frank Mahovlich also assisted on the goal which turned out to be the game-winner as the Canadiens beat the North Stars 6-2. The Victoriaville Pro model stick that Beliveau accomplished the feat with has "J. Beliveau" stamped on the front of the shaft, not far from where "500e but" was added in ballpoint. Beliveau's usual white tape over black forms his standard knob while black tape is on the blade. There are a couple of small mounting holes near the top edge of the blade to mention, as well as the fact that the stick is in marvellous, uncracked and solid condition. From a dream season (his last) in which Beliveau reached the lofty plateau and also captained the team to an unlikely Stanley Cup championship, the history-making piece of lumber will be accompanied by a signed letter of authenticity from Jean Beliveau.
