Climbing back to the top of the international hockey world after losing the gold medal in the previous two tournaments, the Soviet Union claimed the unified nation's first of five consecutive gold medals at the 1978 IIHF World Championships in Prague. This would be the Russian's 15th title, with HOFer Viacheslav Fetisov named best defenseman at the tournament. The World Junior Championships that season were held in Canada, with the Soviets also dominating this tournament, winning gold, while Sweden took the silver and the host Canadians the bronze. We offer a pair of medals from 1978, with an IIHF World Championships gold medal, and a IIHF World Junior Championships silver medal. Both medals are identical in design, measuring 2 3/4" in diameter with the original blue and yellow ribbons attached to each, and "1978" to the bails, with "World Championships" appearing in raised letters circling the perimeter on the obverse along with two generic players (the silver medal has "Junior" in raised letters beneath). Featuring a painted globe IIHF logo with crossed hockey sticks on each reverse, they are encompassed by "International Ice Hockey Federation" in matching style raised letters. The gold medal displays beautifully and remains in near mint condition, with just a small area of discolouration to the silver medal.
