Perhaps the most famous hockey card set of all-time, cards from O-Pee-Chee’s 1979-80 release came in wax packs that contained 14 cards and cost young ones 20 cents, with the rookie cards of a young phenom by the name of Wayne Gretzky coveted by all by seasons end. Featuring beautiful colours and edges that have largely avoided the rough cut edges that O-Pee-Chee issues of the era are known for, this copy of card #18 picturing Wayne Gretzky has been deemed worthy of BVG's EX-MT+ 6.5 designation after their inspection of the treasured cardboard. With the card sporting an image that is off-center from left-to-right, the card also displays with clean surfaces and sharp corners that show just slight wear all the way around, heaviest at the bottom left corner, while also retaining good colours. Of note, the card is marred by the commonly seen rough cut edges that O-Pee-Chee releases of the era usually present with in most cases. For the other 395 cards that make up the rest of the set, the group is seen as being largely in the high-grade state of EX-MT to NM with the team checklist cards found from #244 to #261 in the checklist all unmarked. With the lone glaring exception being card #385 of Rey Comeau that has print damage on the front, the key cards are led by EX-MT to NM examples of 40-Salming (80-20 centering), 125-Clarke (90-10 centering top-to-bottom), 131-Checklist (unmarked - 85-15 centering), 150-Dryden (90-10 centering), 175-Howe, 185-Hull (85-15 centering), 230-Bossy, 237-Checklist (90-10 centering) and 346-Checklist (slight wax stain on front) while 200-Lafleur is a bit worse off at EX to EX-MT due to a slight right border ding and a touch of wear at the bottom right corner. Rounded out with a VG-EX to EX neighbourhood copy of card #160 picturing Marcel Dionne over the front that has a chipped bottom right corner, the set makes for a satisfying addition to any vintage collection that should please our lucky winning bidder upon its arrival.
