The greatest player in the history of hockey and the best to ever play in the NHL, “The Great One” remains one of the hottest names in the hobby even 24 years after his retirement in 1999. Up on the block here, is this collection of 540+ cards all displaying Wayne Gretzky that date between the 1980s and 1990s with brands like O-Pee-Chee, Topps and others all represented. Including approx. 548 total cards, the earliest ones come to us from the 1980-81 season with approx. 30 examples present and accounted for. With none of his regular release cards present, others include cards #3 (Record Breaker x6 with the 4 best all in EX-MT range), #87 (All-Star x6 with the 2 best both in EX-MT range), #162 (Assist Leaders x2 with the best one in EX-MT range), #163 (Scoring Leaders x6 with the best 2 both in EX to EX-MT range) and #182 (Team Checklist x7 with the best 2 found in EX to EX-MT and EX-MT to NM range). For Topps cards from the 1980-81 season, three total cards are present including the Record Breaker (unscratched), All-Star (scratched) and Assist Leaders (scratched) examples. 1981-82 cards consist of both OPC and Topps examples with the OPC breakdown consisting of cards #106 (Regular release – x7 – 3 best are all in EX-MT to NM range), #125 (In Action – x8 – 6 best are all EX-MT to NM range), #126 (Team Leaders – x8 – 3 best are all EX-MT to NM range), #383 (Assist Leaders – x8 – 4 best are in the EX to EX-MT and EX-MT to NM ranges), #384 (Scoring Leaders – x9 – 4 best are all EX-MT to NM range) and #392 (Record Breaker – x8 – 4 best are in EX-MT to NM range). Cards from the same year’s Topps release include examples of card #16 (Regular release – x11 – 9 best are all EX-MT to NMT) and #52 (Team Leaders – x 10 – all in EX-MT to NM range). The 1982-83 cards total around 40 with most being mid-grade examples except for a few exceptions with the regular release, in action and numerous leader/record breaker cards from that year’s OPC set present. Cards from the 1983-84 season total approx. 90, with examples from just O-Pee-Chee represented, including those of the Team Goal Leaders (#22 – x11), Oilers Highlights (#23 w/Messier – x7), regular release (#29 – x5), Hart Trophy (#203 – x13), Art Ross Trophy (#204 – x8), Record Breaker (#212 – x11), Goal Leaders (#215 – x13), Assist Leaders (#216 – x14) and Scoring Leaders (#217 – x11) with all the best examples in the grade range of EX-MT to NM conditions while some lower grade specimens are scattered throughout. Cardboard from the 1984-85 season totals approx. 59 cards picturing the great one from both the OPC and Topps releases. The OPC’s include Wayne’s All-Star (#208 – x7 – 4 best all EX-MT to NM range), regular release (#243 – x3 – two are low grade the other is in the vicinity of VG-EX), Team Goal Leaders (#357 – x4 – best is EX-MT range), Art Ross Trophy (#373 – x3 – best is EX-MT range), Hart Trophy (#374 – x2 – best is around EX-MT to NM range), Scoring Leaders (#380 – x4 – 2 best are in EX-MT to NM range), Goal Leaders (#381 – x9 – 5 best all in EX-MT to NM range), Assist Leaders (#382 – x3 – two are lower grade, the best is around EX range), PPG Leaders (#383 – x5 – one around the scope of EX-MT to NM) and Record Breakers (#388 – x3 – one around the proximity of EX-MT to NM) examples. The Topps cards from the same year include nine (9) copies of card #51 all around EX-MT to NM condition and six (6) copies of card #154, his All-Star card, also all in the same EX-MT to NM vicinity. Rounding out the collection, mixed years from the mid-to-late 1980s total approx. 34 cards in a range of conditions while the rest of the group consists of about 225 others from the decade of the 1990 with most on the higher end of the grading scale with some exceptions mixed in. Overall, a wonder lot for those wanting dealer inventory or just looking to make their collections a little bit “greater”.
