This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 2/28/2023
A trio of classic set offerings from the likes of O-Pee-Chee that are packed full of HOFers, rookies and various stars are up for grabs here through this lot including the Canadian company’s releases from 1977-78, 1980-81 and 1989-90. Starting with the ’77-78 offering, sixteen graded cards lead the way, including specimens of Bryan Trottier and Mike Palmateer that have been inspected and encapsulated by KSA to the tune of NMM+ 8.5 and NM 7 designations. The 14 additional slabs are all done by PSA with a pair of MINT 9’s leading the way through the Black Hawks and Canadiens logo cards, followed by a NM-MT+ 8.5 of the Red Wings logo. PSA NM-MT 8’s have been given to cards 134-Milbury, 324-Sabres, 326-Barons, 327-Rockies, 335-Penguins, 336-Blues and 337-Maple Leafs while a NM 7 has been given to 329-Kings and an EX-MT 6 has been given to 331-Canadiens. The graded group is rounded out two VG 3’s of 323-Bruins and 339-Capitals. The raw cards, all housed in 9-card binder pages are found largely in the grade range of EX-MT in our opinion with some exceptions both higher and lower. The three checklists are found unmarked and, in a condition, mirroring the rest of the set while and additional 20 cards of various stars are also included, with an additional Trottier second year card present and all found in a condition that is uniform to the rest of the set as well.
For the 1980-81 set, the ensemble is paced by the graded rookie cards of Ray Bourque and Mark Messier with both having been deemed worthy of EX 5 designations by SGC. Other first year offerings featured in the set include those of Mike Gartner, Michel Goulet and Rod Langway. The Gartner card is the best of the three, faliing in the scope of EX-MT/NM, a range found for the rest of the cards in the set as well, while displaying 70-30 centering. The Goulet and Langway examples both are found in the vicinity of EX-MT with light corner wear. Wayne Gretzky is well represented within the set, with “The Great One’s” second year offering found in the range of VG-EX condition, presenting with corner wear. Other Gretzky offering including card 3-Record Breaker in G/VG condition due to a crease, 87-All-Star in the range of EX with corner wear and 182-Team Checklist that is in the vicinity of EX-MT/NM while remaining unmarked. Housed in 9 pocket binder pages, all the team checklists remain unmarked along with checklists #123 and #396 with #257 having been marked.
The 1989-90 set, highlighted by the rookie offerings of Joe Sakic and Brian Leetch, also includes a PSA GEM MT 10 slab housing card #43 of Jarri Kurri. Once again housed in 9 pocket binder pages, the checklist contains star power of Gretzky, Lemieux, Yzerman and Roy with the whole assembly in a uniform high grade of EX-MT/NM, including the key rookies.
