Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction Winter 2023

Released a season after Wayne Gretzky started his career of National Hockey League dominance, O-Pee-Chee’s 1980-81 release, consisting of 396-cards, is highlight by Wayne’s second year offerings and numerous other cards as well as rookie releases of Hall of Famers Mark Messier, Ray Bourque, Mike Gartner, Michel Goulet and Rod Langway. Headlining this assembly of 43-year-old cardboard, we see the aforementioned cards of Gretzky’s sophomore release and Messier’s RC having been graded by PSA with both receiving pleasing and respectable marks of EX-MT 6. With majority of the set in mirroring EX-MT condition range in our opinion, a good number of better examples, leaning towards the scope of NM, are found throughout as well. Card #140 in the set, the Hall of Fame rookie card of Ray Bourque, is found in the range of EX condtion, as is his record breaker card #2. The rest of the notable rookie class including #67 Michel Goulet (90-10 centering right-to-left), #195 Mike Gartner and #344 Rod Langway are all found in the scope of EX-MT/NM shape. As expected, “The Great One” dominates the checklist with the phenom pictured over the front of card #3 Record Breaker (95-5 centering left-to-right), #87 2nd Team All-Star (slight surface imperfection), #162 Assist Leaders and #163 Scoring Leaders, with all in the EX-MT/NM condition range. Card #182 Team Leaders also shows Gretzky, serving as the Oilers team checklist with this example lightly marked with pencil and in EX condition. The three checklists and all but the above listed team checklists remain unmarked with the main series offerings all in the range of EX-MT and EX-MT/NM condition. The two PSA holders remain in virtually perfect condition.
