The oldest professional football trophy competed for in North America, the Grey Cup was first awarded in 1909, with Albert Grey, 4th Earl Grey, the Governor General of Canada, donating a trophy for the Canadian amateur rugby football championship. The University of Toronto Varsity Blues was the first team to hoist the prestigious award, with the Toronto Argonauts winning the most championships. Hailing from the collection of longtime journalist Allen Abel, who attended the games personally, we offer 1978 and 1979 Grey Cup programs and press pins with Abel's original press pass tickets stapled to the interior, along with 1980 and 1982 Grey Cup programs and press pins with Abel's accompanying press passes (these are loose, not attached to the programs). The lot also features programs for the 1980 CFL East Final (Nov 16, 1980 Montreal vs Hamilton, won by Hamilton 24-13, with Media Press Pass stapled to the interior), 1977 CFL All-Star Game (June 4, 1977 East vs West, won by the East All-Stars 20-19, with Media Press Box ticket stapled to the interior), and 1979 Ottawa Roughriders (stub stapled to interior), along with six additional 1970s/80s football programs, mostly CFL examples. The majority of the programs show light wear, with no issues for the gorgeous Grey Cup press pins.
Covering the world's greatest sporting endeavors for half a century which included serving for a decade on Capitol Hill and in the briefing room of the White House, longtime journalist, sports columnist, producer and on-air television correspondent Allen Abel has traveled to over one hundred countries, witnessing epic battles and accomplishments from the press box; from Ali vs Fraser, to the Miracle On Ice, the genesis of Gretzky, to the fall of the Berlin Wall.
Winning six National Magazine awards for political, travel and sports writing as a contributor to numerous publications including Sports Illustrated and Maclean's, Abel was also an on-air host, narrator, writer or producer on dozens of documentaries for HBO, Discovery, National Geographic, Hockey Night in Canada, the CBC and others. Abel has also authored a number of non-fiction works including 'The Short Life of Hughie McLoon — A True Story of Baseball, Magic, and Murder'
We are pleased to offer a number of desirable and seldom-seen items from Abel's personal 50-year sporting journey, including programs, media guides, tickets, press passes, autographs and much more, along with an impressive grouping of Olympic material personally acquired while working at a dozen Olympic Games.
