A standout during his time with Dynamo Moscow in his native Russia, defenseman Alexander Karpovtsev was drafted by Quebec in 1990 but made his NHL debut for the New York Rangers in 1993-94. The Yaroslavl native dressed for five different clubs throughout his career while also representing Russia internationally. From his rookie campaign, we have a photo-matched Rangers jersey worn by Karpovtsev during the 1994 Stanley Cup finals. Gerry Cosby and CCM labeling is affixed to the collar along with a size “52” fly tag, with embroidered CCM and NHL crests to the reverse hem. Styled with the classic “Rangers” across the chest in drop-shadow tackle twill, “25” is sewn to the sleeves and verso in matching material, with the 1994 Stanley Cup finals crest to the left shoulder (there is evidence to the interior of previously having the 1994 All-Star Game patch). The intact dual-clasp fight strap also sports a Crosby label. Showing heavy game-use with considerable pilling covering the lower front, there are marks, burns and paint transfer to the sleeves along with team repairs, with approx 11 examples situated on the left sleeve, and 6 repairs on the right sleeve. Video from Game 6 of the finals (June 11, 1994, won by Vancouver 4-1) has been matched to the mark on the bottom of the “5” on the right sleeve. Karpovtsev was killed along with members of the Lokomotiv hockey team in the 2011 Yakovelev Yak-42 passenger crash. An LOA from the Rangers will accompany along with a second LOA.
