Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction Spring 2022
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 5/31/2022
After retiring from the National Hockey League at the completion of the 1970-71 season, Mr. Hockey never had the itch of playing leave his body, especially when the opportunity of playing with his sons Mark and Marty presented itself with the World Hockey Association’s Houston Aeros. And so, after two years away from playing the game, the 1973-74 season saw the elder Howe suiting up alongside his sons in the Lonestar State. Presented here is a lot of eight (8) photos that have been signed by Mr. Hockey from his time in the WHA and NHL with the aforementioned Aeros and New England/Hartford Whalers including multi-signed photos with his two sons, Mark and Marty. Four of the photos measure out to 16” x 20”, the first of which is a heartfelt image of Mr. Hockey and his sons with Mark resting his head on dad’s shoulder. All three individuals have signed the image on their respective images in silver pen with each adding a personalized inscription to the original owner with the elder Howe adding his famous “Mr. Hockey” inscription. Two of the remaining 16” x 20” images showcase the moment that Gordie Howe scored his 1000th professional hockey goal as a member of the New England Whalers. Both signed in blue marker with the “Mr. Hockey” inscription as well as “1000th goal” on each and one having been dated with “Dec 7th, 1977”. The last of the largest images in the lot is a print of Sports Illustrated’s cover from March 11th, 1974 declaring Howe as still #1 despite being 45 years of age. Again, signed by Howe in blue ink, this time the legend has added the inscription of “HOF 72”. All the 16” x 20” photos are in excellent condition with no flaws whatsoever and are ready for framing or preservation. The next image, measuring approximately 19” x 16”, once again features all three Howe’s, lining up for a faceoff as members of one of the NHL’s four newest franchises, the Hartford Whalers, against Mr. Hockey’s old club, the Detroit Red Wings. All three Howe’s have signed by their respective images in blue ink and all signatures display crisp with no flaws. Gordie has added his “Mr. Hockey” moniker. The last two on-ice photos feature the Howe’s in their time with the Houston Aeros and both measure out to approximately 11” x 14” with one of the images signed by all three Howe’s and the second signed by Gordie and Mark. Both images are signed in blue ink with the eldest Howe as per usual adding his “Mr. Hockey” inscription. The last image, measuring in at approximately 11” x 14” as well, features the entire Howe family at home relaxing in a rare off-ice moment. Signed once again by all three-hockey playing Howe’s as well as Collen, the family head, in blue ink and displaying well with a personal aspect based on the image. All eight images in the lot are ready for framing, display, and preservation in your collection.
