Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction Fall 2022

Oh, Canada! Some of the most tantalizing and challenging collectibles for player collectors, and others, were originally offered north of the United States-Canada border, with icons Ted Williams and Joe DiMaggio leading the roster here, as well as in World Wide Gum’s 48-card set. The Williams issue is from the same year as his official (Play Ball) rookie card, with young Ted in 1939 smacking 31 homers and driving in a league-high 145 runs (the first rookie to lead the league in RBIs) while batting at a .327 clip – a sensational start to a without-parallel career. Recently slabbed and graded PR 1 by PSA, the example here has back damage that includes paper loss, similar to a Joe DiMaggio entry, the latter’s eye appeal admittedly inferior to its counterpart. The scarcity of such pieces is evidenced by the PSA Population Report, with just eight Williams and six DiMaggio examples ever submitted for inspection in the history of the grading firm. Nifty bonus throw-ins and in similar condition as the superstars are cards of Vince DiMaggio and Frank Crosetti, the latter with a small surface and edge tear. For Teddy Ballgame and Joe D. enthusiasts, scarcity trumps condition here.
