Advancing the sport with the “running game”; the precursor to the modern game, while American colleges were still playing “Association Football” which was essentially soccer, the Montreal Football Club is recognized as one of if not the very first “modern” club, playing what some authorities characterize as the first game of North American football in 1868. Exceedingly rare, and an example of master craftsmanship from one of the best period photography houses in North America, we have a gorgeous and highly detailed 1898 Montreal Football Club 30th anniversary composite cabinet photo by Wm Notman & Sons featuring Montreal Victorias Stanley Cup champion and HOFer Graham Drinkwater, with the photo hailing from the personal collection of noted photography historian Mark Rucker. Exquisite is composition, with portrait images of all 200+ past team members along with vivid game sequences – unheard of for the time, the 14 ½” x 21” image is affixed to a slightly larger mount, with “Montreal Football Club” and “1868 1898” listed at center along with a full gridiron shot of presumably the then-current club, with numerous players in Union Suit uniforms (Drinkwater is present directly beneath the game-action sequence within the upper left corner). A daunting task for the photographer that would have consumed endless time and resources to produce, “WN Notman & Sons” appears over the bottom right, with the image in stunning high-grade, featuring unimprovable clarity, with wear to the mount including residue at each end and loss along the bottom border. When factoring both quality and aesthetics, this historic original photo of North America’s first football club by one of the era’s premier photographers is without question one of the best period cabinet photos we have ever handled for any sport.
