Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Winter 2022

A near-perfect example of Wayne Gretzky’s ultra-coveted 1979-80 O-Pee-Chee rookie card is on the auction block here, with Beckett's BVG department inspecting and assessing this example and rendering an alluring 8 NM-MT verdict. The image of the boy wonder is from his first professional season with the World Hockey Association's Edmonton Oilers, before the team’s entry into the NHL a year later and is right of center. Nothing else obvious though is to report, with the tiniest hint of wear on the bottom left corner. A two-inch diagonal faint scuff/scratch to the right of Gretzky’s image on the Beckett holder is to note, the scuff/scratch is mainly only visible when looking at the holder from an angle with the holder remaining overall in very clean condition. Like the back informs, Wayne was considered the best prospect to turn pro since Guy Lafleur and it was obvious to many that he would have success in the NHL, but to the extent that he did? Not many could have predicted that he would not only break as many records as he did, (some five dozen!), but shatter them in a fashion that, well, has rendered his rookie card an absolute prerequisite to a big-time Gretzky/rookie card collection. You’ll be pleased and proud to have secured this high grade beauty. This item is relisted from our Fall 2021 auction as Chad Werbo from SK (Canada) failed to honor his bid.
