Utterly shocking the entire hockey world and springboarding the expansion of the game south of the border, the famous – or infamous trade that witnessed icon Wayne Gretzky relocate from his home and the Edmonton Oilers to the United States and the Los Angeles Kings took place on August 9, 1988 shortly after the Oilers were crowned Stanley Cup champions. While Albertans dreaded the loss of the game’s greatest player, ticket sales soared in California, and the game was forever changed. This lot offers a large collection of 35mm negatives (623) and slides (19) totaling approx 642 that feature the historic deal. Mostly images hailing from the press conference that announced his departure, there are also numerous images of Wayne tearing up, images of Glen Sather and Peter Pocklington fielding questions from reporters, images with wife Janet at a press conference in Los Angeles at the Sheraton Plaza La Reina, Gretzky in his first Kings sweater, Gretzky with Bruce McNall, and more. The majority of the negatives show light handling with no issues.
