Hockey historians and autograph enthusiasts may well be flabbergasted by this fabulous thought-provoking lot featuring Dr. Randy McLennan, a two-time Stanley Cup challenger. Ontario-born McLennan was a member of the Queen's University squad that challenged for Lord Stanley's trophy in March of 1895 in what is considered the first challenge match in Stanley Cup history, losing however 5-1 to the Montreal AAA. A decade later, McLennan was one of two men considered former elite players to be part of the famous Dawson City Nuggets' Cup challenge, making the fascinating and well-documented lengthy (in distance and time!) trek from the Yukon to Ottawa to take on the mighty Ottawa Silver Seven in January of 1905. Travelling some 4,000 miles by dog sled, bicycle, foot, boat and train, the Nuggets were reportedly treated well while in Ottawa, except for while on the ice, with the powerful Silver Seven defeating them 9-2 and 23-2 to retain the Stanley Cup. A day after the second game, the Yukon Territory reportedly announced that McLennan and teammate Norman Watt, who worked in the Gold Commissioner's Office, would be laid off. The splendid penmanship of Randy McLennan ("D.R. McLennan") is at the bottom of the offered Gold Commissioner's Office document, dated June 21st, 1902 and measuring approximately 5" by 7-1/2", with one fold line. Joining it is an interesting real photo postcard with holiday greetings that pictures a man and a dog sled team and "Randy" (written not on the card but before production). It has a Yukon postmark, while a postcard-size photograph of Dr. McLennan in later years includes "Uncle Randy - Yukon" penned at the top. A Google search of the Dawson City Nuggets hockey team will provide a photo of McLennan posing with his teammates outside Dey's Arena in Ottawa in January of 1905, along with other intriguing information. A surely one-of-a-kind lot - items pertaining to the Dawson City team are considered rare - will be a formidable addition to your important collection.
