Long thought to have been issued by Laval Dairy, (likely because of the “Courtoisie Laiterie Laval” that appears on the #1 card featuring Jean Beliveau) are cards like these, with Bedard & Donaldson the actual company responsible for the (blank-backed) cards that feature players from the Quebec Senior Hockey League. Interestingly, Mr. Beliveau related to us in the past that he had a stack of his own card back in the day, to hand out during appearances when he was a representative for Laval Dairy. A light half-inch crease descending from the middle of the top edge and two tiny creases near the bottom edge render the Beliveau card here G+ in our book, with other keys present being 76-Toe Blake (VG-EX), 37-Punch Imlach (VG) and 16-Herbie Carnegie (VG). Expect a VG average (most are in the G+ to VG+ range) among the rest of the 53 from ‘51-52, with paper loss affecting half a dozen lesser lights. Similarly, few obvious/unsightly creases are observed among 42 “update” or “subset” cards, thought to have been released during the ’52-53 season. Some VG-EX to EX cards are present, with paper loss spotted on the fronts (top border) of ten examples. A fine opportunity to score the biggies from the inaugural issue, with quantities of the sequel not often offered.
