It is quite possible that Howie Morenz was carried off the Montreal Forum ice on this vintage stretcher, or one just like it, after the Canadiens legend suffered his ill-fated broken leg in January 1937. This incredible relic was among the ancient treasures yielded by the closing of the Forum in 1996. The stretcher is made up of two wooden poles, each measuring over 90 inches in length, with a 2-foot wide swath of canvas stretched out between them when the two metal bars underneath are extended to carry an occupant. The 70 long sheet of canvas exhibits plenty of wear from its decades of use. There are three small holes to report and plenty of stains, yet it is no stretch (pardon the pun) to think that this ancient tool of the hockey trade could still accomplish its mission. Two folding metal bars underneath each have a clasp to hold it rigid and open when extended. There are four metal bars on each corner of the stretcher that serve as feet to raise the tapered handles off the ground. There is no mistaking where this stretcher saw action, with FORUM painted in black on each end of one of the poles, and NO. 3 painted in black in the middle of the same pole. There is also a cloth label from Mine Safety Appliances sewn to the canvas. Please take note that special shipping arrangements will be required.
