Enough to pique the interest of pre-war collectors are small quantities of 1924-25 Maple Crispette cards, with this assembly thus sure to heighten the intrigue to lofty levels and headlined by a trio of Montreal Canadiens who the previous season had led the Habs to a Stanley Cup championship. The somewhat haunting image of Georges Vezina and that of a young Aurele Joliat are on cards among the 13 here graded VG-EX 4 by PSA, with the firm giving VG 3 assessment to examples featuring fellow Hall of Famers Howie Morenz and Punch Broadbent. Most notable amid the other VG-EX 4s are Hamilton Tigers 10-Red Green, 22-Shorty Green and 23-Mickey Roach (they would go on strike come playoff time!), with the others all being rookie cards; 3-Fowler, 5-Skinner, 7-Herberts, 8-Harris, 20-Carroll, 26-Langlois, 28-Lowrey and 29-Scott. The raw rest are all lesser in condition, (most are F or G), but most present well for low graders. Like the Morenz card, that of Newsy Lalonde exhibits staining (presumably caramel stains from Maple Crispette products), along with a diagonal crease, with 19-Rothschild RC and three others best; 21-Burch, 25-Forbes and 24-Randall, the latter whiter than the others and measuring markedly short. The only heavily multi-creased (P) card is 11-Boucher. The cards were part of a promotion, with a full 30-card set redeemable for a pair of skates and the card of Sprague Cleghorn thought to have been short-printed and thus considered rare – it is not present. Somewhat crude but still charming and enticing are Maple Crispette cards, with this gathering sure to garner mucho interest and enabling the new owner to acquire a desirable pre-war issue.
It should be noted that among the raw cards, a couple are oversized, making the others appear short or narrow, although we do not detect any obvious trimming with the exception of 6-Cook RC, (markedly narrower than the rest), and the aforementioned Randall example.
