Complete pre-war hockey card sets, with good reason, always command respect and interest, with the level elevated when it comes to O-Pee-Chee’s unique 1936-37 die-cut issue, the cards designed to have part of the top half folded in order to stand the cards up. Almost all intact and in alluring condition is this assembly, with the key cards just back from PSA premises. With the rookie card rage and the heightening values of RCs, that of Maple Leaf legend Syl Apps has surpassed the set’s kingpins in a well-known price guide. A terrific EX 5 Apps example contributes here, with icon Howie Morenz’s card #121 also earning EX 5 recognition. Other leading stars of the day, Eddie Shore, Charlie Conacher and Aurele Joliat, also look fine indeed in holders labeled VG-EX 4. Completing the encapsulated six-pack at GOOD 2 is another hockey immortal, King Clancy, lowered by smidgeons of glue-like residue on the reverse but displaying as well as the rest. Other than Turk Broda’s rookie card which is separated into two pieces, most of the raw entries mirror the slabbed 4s and 5s (more so the 4s) and have, with the exception of two, similar degrees of toning – one can tell that the set was assembled, for the most part, back in the day and has had but one owner – a definite attribute to appreciate. Enough corner wear may render a few VG+ (or at worst, VG), while just five others exhibit a small crease, above the middle of their die-cut sections (extending up to the top edge) - 102-Lionel Conacher (VG+), 105-N. Colville RC, 117-Goodfellow, 124-Jackson and 131-Aurie – rendering most VG in our book, although a similar crease is curiously detected at the top of the Morenz and Joliat examples. One condition exception is 122-Horner; with a similar tiny crease and subtle (paper loss) back damage. Other notables in the lineup are Hall of Famers Sweeney Schriner RC, Lynn Patrick and Hooley Smith. In summary, you’ll have our admiration for securing such an important pre-war issue and you’ll get to proudly admire these charming scarcities.
