Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Winter 2022
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 3/2/2022
With character influences to include actor Douglas Fairbanks' film portrayal of the swashbuckler Zorro, and Leonardo da Vinci's diagram of the ornithopter; a flying machine with huge bat-like wings, Batman was created by writer and animator Bob Kane in 1939 in response to the success of Superman, with publishers scrambling for additional “superheroes”. This lot offers a sketch of Batman’s sidekick Robin signed by Kane, along with a 1962 Project Mercury first-day cover with added Buck Rogers sketch by Len Dworkins encapsulated as “Authentic Autograph” by Beckett. First, the Robin sketch is executed on firm white stock at 6 ¾” x 10 ½”, with the large black marker sketch displaying beautifully, with Kane signing with personalization and the year of “94”. There is a stamp that states “Guaranteed Authentic by: Michael Polks Autographs” on the reverse. The first-day cover is dated Feb 20, 1962, with Cape Canaveral postmark, with Dworkins adding the Buck Rogers sketch to the lower right, with some toning to the envelope. A JSA LOA will accompany for the Kane signature.
