“What do you have on Dryden?” is a question that dealers at card/collectibles shows get asked and their response is often something like, “not much – it’s hard to keep the stuff – he’s mighty popular.” An instant collection or terrific inventory is on the auction block here, with Ken’s important 1971-72 O-Pee-Chee rookie card leading the way. No unsightly flaws are to report, with however tiny creases near three of the four corners and a (right) edge indentation rendering the well-centered example VG+. A ’71-72 OPC poster is another highlight and displays marvelously in a thin frame, with a light crease rising up diagonally from the middle to attain Dryden’s famous first NHL mask but no edge tears are observed. A logo-less Viceroy puck is beautifully autographed in gold ink by the legend, while two NHLPA postcards in appealing crease-free condition are joined by a similar-size snapshot of Toronto’s Jack Valiquette skating through Dryden’s crease in an action shot from Maple Leaf Gardens – cool. Collectible cards and inserts and the like comprise much of the rest of the stash – we count 80, with some duplication and a mix of conditions present (minimal high grade examples). A card showing Dryden with the Conn Smythe Trophy and from Upper Deck’s Canadiens Centennial set (#257) is serial-numbered “019/100” and is noteworthy, as is a complete ensemble from the night the Habs retired the goalie’s number 29; a folder, mini-banner, lineup card, Lapensée print and un-used cardboard goalie mask. Publications include a ’75-76 NHL Guide, a Ken Dryden book and two Hockey Illustrated magazines. Completing two ’72-73 Colgate “heads,” a stack of newspaper clippings and mini-posters/pin-ups pulled from magazines. A splendid years-in-the-making collection merits considerable consideration.
