The largest and heaviest specimens we have ever seen, this antique pair of 19th century ice skates were most likely constructed by a blacksmith, as they feature thick blades with numerous hammer marks. Matched by thick wooden bases and heavy leather strapping, no size or maker’s marks are visible, with the skates showing good wear from both their age and former use. We should also note that the pair weigh almost four pounds! Accompanying the unique models, we also have a pair of antique children’s skates with squared-off blades and reinforced ankle supports with brass plates. Likely produced by Union Hardware with blonde wooden bases and most of the original strapping, the strapping is somewhat brittle, with circular styrofoam inserted to help hold the same shape to the straps as when worn (just inserted, these are easily removable). One of the straps also shows a repair administered with staples. Please note that each antique skate lot in our current auction hails from an advanced 19th century skate collection.
