One of the most desirable traits for antique ice skates and rarely found, examples with original paint remaining are seldom seen, especially in red finish – the most desirable colour, and we offer two pairs, with these likely produced for speed skating and/or touring. The first 19th century pair feature the majority of the original red finish over the tops and bottoms of the wooden bases, with most of the leather strapping intact for each, with the heavy steel curled-tip blades showing considerable wear and pitting. No maker’s marks are visible. The second pair sport pointed blades with a good amount of the original red and black paint design over the top of the wooden bases, with no hardware or strapping remaining. The blades do show wear and have marks. Both pairs display beautifully and would be an ideal addition to any antique sports or folk art collection. Please note that each antique skate lot in our current auction hails from an advanced 19th century skate collection.
