Ideal for those who appreciate exceptionally rare survivors and seldom-seen examples, we offer two pairs of rare antique 19th century ice skates, with each a noteworthy specimen. First, we have square-blade models by L.H. & C.H. Dawson that feature finished wooden bases with polychrome surfaces along with mostly intact strapping. Each skate sports a multi-coloured design on each underside along with gold-finished tops – with this quite rare, as most antique pairs usually show only remnants and traces of their original surfaces, with this giving the pair a gorgeous folk art aesthetic. The maker is stamped into the blades, with most of the finish worn away, and additional wear to the bases. The second pair was produced by A.E. Worden, with his name stamped into each blade, with thin wooden bases utilized and slightly-curling blade tips. An especially rare trait, each blade has 17 evenly-sized holes drilled completely through in a horizontal row, with the design visually pleasing and ideal for display. Each skate has some strapping attached, with wear to the bases and marks and light pitting to the blades. Please note that each antique skate lot in our current auction hails from an advanced 19th century skate collection.
