Manufactured in Norwich, Connecticut during the Civil War and the first of their kind we have ever handled or offered, these utterly rare antique ice skates by Douglas Rogers & Co include steel-tempered blades and engraved metal ankle and tendon supports along with complete leather strapping. Reminiscent of the detailed engraving found on high quality 19th century spurs, each wooden-based skate sports a size “5” stamped to the underside, with the metal hinged components featuring engraved laurel designs, with “Blondin Skate Pat’d Oct 2d 1860” engraved on the inside section of each skate, along with “Douglas Rogers & Co – Norwich Conn” engraved to the outside sections. The front leather strapping has been reinforced with small brass plates, with an “1863” patent date stamped into each blade. One of the most attractive and well-built antique pairs of skates we have handled, the pair shows just minor expected wear commensurate with their age and former use, with the leather somewhat worn (one strap extension has been repaired with staples). Please note that each antique skate lot in our current auction hails from an advanced 19th century skate collection.
