One of the best NHL teams during the early-1970s; advancing to the Stanley Cup Finals twice in just three seasons, the Chicago Black Hawks had five players selected to represent Team Canada at the 1972 Canada-Russia Series vs the Soviets including Pat Stapleton, with the London native battling the big red machine in 7 of the 8 contests played. Paired mostly with Hawks teammate Bill White, the duo was the best defensive core for the Canadians, and we offer a team-signed stick used at the tournament by Stapleton that originates from his personal collection. A Sher-Wood Tex-N-Wrap model with “Stapleton” and “12” stamped along with a “Jul 1972” date stamp, the original black tape remains on the blade and white beehive pattern over the knob. Exhibiting great game-use with wear and marks throughout the stick’s length, there is also heavy red paint transfer. 36 have signed in matching blue ballpoint, with many of the sigs bunched-up. Signers include Stapleton, along with Clarke, Henderson, Ellis, Goldsworthy, Cashman, Ratelle, Dionne, Berenson, Hull, Gilbert, Redmond, Bergman, White, Seiling, Tallon, Glennie, Awrey, Park, Dryden, Johnston, Sinden, Ferguson, F Mahovlich, the Esposito brothers and others. We should also note that due to the inclusion of Glennie, Tallon, Dionne and Johnston who never took part in the games vs the Soviets, the stick may have been used against either Sweden or Czechoslovakia. An LOA from the Stapleton family will accompany.
