Western Division champions, losing only 9 games at home throughout the regular season, the Chicago Black Hawks advanced to the Stanley Cup finals against the Montreal Canadiens in 1972-73. Tony Esposito backstopped the club throughout the majority the playoffs, with star blueliner Pat Stapleton finishing third in playoff scoring for the Hawks behind only Dennis Hull and Stan Mikita. Hailing from the personal collection of longtime Black Hawk and Summit Series star Pat Stapleton, this goalie stick was used by HOF netminder Tony Esposito circa 1972-73. A Northland Custom Pro model with “Esposito” stamped to the upper shaft and “35” handwritten, the original black tape is in place on the blade and paddle, with black-over-white tape on the knob. Stamps also appear from team supplier Gunzo’s, with the top edges of the paddle custom-shaved for Esposito’s preferred grip. Exhibiting heavy game-use, there is considerable wear to the blade including the underside and at the heel, with a large crack beneath the tape and chipping along the reverse blade from Espo banging the stick against his skate blade tips. There is also additional wear and marks to the paddle and shaft. An LOA from the Stapleton family will accompany.
