Finishing in first place in the NHL for just the second time in franchise history and led by new captain Pat Stapleton, the Chicago Black Hawks won a record 45 games in 1969-70 while earning 99 points. The Windy City hopefuls then defeated Gordie Howe and the Detroit Red Wings in the Quarterfinals before losing to Bobby Orr and the Boston Bruins in the Stanley Cup Semifinals. This 10K gold ring was presented to Stapleton for the Black Hawks status as NHL regular-season champions. Size 9 with an approx weight of 30 grams, a large diamond sets centered on the tableau encompassed by a perimeter of 12 smaller diamonds, with “69 – NHL – 70 – Champions” in slanted letters circling the bezel. The right shank sports the Prince of Wales Trophy with “Stapleton” above and “Pride” below, while the left features a Black Hawks Indian head logo with “Chicago” above and “Harmony” below. The inner band is stamped "Josten 10K". Exhibiting moderate wear from use, there are scratches to the inner and outer band and a few small dings along edges, with a minor gouge visible beneath the “Pride” on the right shank. As an added bonus and rarely ever found, the original 5” x 4” x 2” wooden presentation box with affixed plaque stating “Designed Expressly for Patrick Stapleton – Chicago Black Hawks – National League Champions – 1969-70” with Arthur Wirtz facsimile signature will accompany (there are marks to the plaque) along with an LOA from the Stapleton family.
