Led on the score sheet by Gordie Drillon, with his points total more than doubled by Red Horner’s 87 penalty minutes, the Toronto Maple Leafs concluded the 1939-40 NHL season with 56 points. Despite a third place finish, the blue and white would advance to the Stanley Cup final, losing a close series to the New York Rangers in six games. This stick has been team-signed by the 1939-40 Stanley Cup finalist Toronto Maple Leafs. A generic one-piece “Professional” model with green painted accent over the lower shaft, stamps from Leafs’ supplier “Love & Bennett Ltd” also grace both side of the lower shaft. 22 have signed one side of the shaft in pencil, including deceased HOF members Dick Irvin, Syl Apps, Red Horner, Sweeny Schriner, Gord Drillon and Turk Borda, along with Davidson, Heron, Chamberlain, Langelle, Kelly, Marker, Kampman, Chisholm, Metz, Goldup, Stanowski, McDonald, Church, Hanilton, Stein and trainer Tommy Daly. The signatures display well, with most remaining fairly bold, with a thin layer of shellac added over the signatures. A small metal plaque has also been affixed to the upper shaft with “Presented by Service Clubs MH League to Manager Con Lowry 1940” engraved.
