Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Fall 2021
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 10/26/2021
Arguably the toughest and roughest player in NHL history after Sprague Cleghorn, Eddie Shore is the epitome of “old time hockey”, competing in an era when men were men and the rest stayed home. Shore would require 900 stitches throughout his career, break his nose 14 times, fracture his hip and collarbone, and have every tooth in his mouth knocked out. This signed original painting of the legendary hard-as-nails defenceman was executed by noted collector and artist Carleton McDiarmid, with the image matching artwork done by sports illustrator Bob Coyne for a Bruins Eddie Shore celebratory dinner held in 1933. At 11” x 14” and with an image area of 8” x 10”, the pencil and watercolour work expertly depicts the legendary bruiser, with Eddie signing over the upper left, adding a personalization to McDiarmid of “To Mac”, with a signature added beneath Shore’s left glove. Set in a small frame, the signature displays nicely, with some toning to the artwork. An LOA from Beckett will accompany.
