Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Spring 2021

Starring the superstar who starred in the National Hockey League for two memorable decades is O-Pee-Chee’s 1979-80 hockey card set, with the Wayne Gretzky rookie card involved in this gathering boasting alluring near-perfect centering and a 7.5 NEAR MINT+ grade, the latter rendered by Beckett’s BVG department. Minute wear at two corners is confirmed upon magnification and looks to be the reason the card did not score even higher. Big Wayne is joined by the rest of, by that time, OPC’s standard big, close-to-400 card set, but the caliber does not approach that of the Gretz rookie card, with the storage method not often seen, thank goodness. The cards have been placed upside down and backwards in 9-pocket pages is our assessment, with the back of card #396 in the upper right corner of the first page when the binder is opened. If you flip the binder over and start with card #1, yes you can peruse in the accustomed fashion, but the cards will have been placed from the bottom of upside down pages, if you follow. Varying degrees of corner wear and dings are observed on most, with some checklists/team checklists marked and others (a majority) not; VG to EX-MT is what to expect. We’d suggest focusing on the focal point – Wayne’s rookie card – and seeing the others as throw-ins. If you do that, you’ll be pleased when The Great One and the rest are delivered. Miscellaneous scratches to the front of the Beckett holder are to note.
