Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Spring 2021
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 6/30/2021
Rarely offered or seen and a must have for early Wayne Gretzky collectors, this scarce model stick saw use with the one and only Great One during the genesis of his paramount career, with this specific type of stick seeing action in the 1980-81 NHL preseason, with an example also used in at least one regular-season game, on November 1, 1980 (vs Washington). A signed Titan Custom Pro model in solid red with white accents, “W Gretzky” is stamped in white over the upper shaft, with “99” handwritten to both the upper and lower shaft. Wayne’s original period tape job used briefly during the earlier part of his career remains intact, with black tape placed near the heel on the blade, along with the original white tape over the handle and knob. White tape was added over the black tape on the blade at some point and was later removed, with a small hole near the middle of the shaft, presumably from a former mounting. Showing nice use with wear to the blade and marks to the shaft, the white tape has also darkened over the handle. Wayne has signed the lower front side shaft, with the vintage signature displaying nicely. Comes with a JSA LOA for the Gretzky signature.
