With throngs of supporters lining up one last time for the Rocket, this procession was completely somber and lacked the excitement of past spectacles as a Stanley Cup championship was not celebrated, the Habs all-time greatest had sadly passed. Leaving us on May 27, 2000 at the age of 78, Maurice Richard was honoured as the first non-politician to receive a state funeral in Quebec, with over 100,000 passing this oversized photo while paying their respects at the ardent chapel at the Molson Centre, on May 30, 2000. At approx 35 ½” x 47 ½” and laminated to board, the black and white image depicts the Rocket in full flight, including his trademark gaze. An engraved plaque with French text on the reverse states “Cette photographie laminee etait presente au Centre Molson le 30 Mai 2000 lors du dernier hommage des partisans a Maurice Rocket Richard” and “Don de la famille Richard a la Fondation Roland-Beaulieu par Andre Richard”. Maurice’s son Andre has signed beneath the plaque.
The laminated photo remains in beautiful condition and serves a formidable display piece, with a bit of wear to the bottom corners. Accompanying the display, we have a Canadiens captain’s jersey signed by the Rocket, with the Starter model with “56” sizing sporting tackle twill numbers and team crest. Richard has signed over the right breast in blue marker, with the signature displaying well, with just some very light discolouration to the jersey.
