Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Spring 2021
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 6/30/2021
A 1979-80 O-Pee-Chee assembly in a form somewhat different than what we’ve handled previously is offered here, with ACA, a Canadian firm examining, grading and encapsulating the headline-grabbing rookie card of Wayne Gretzky. The company’s “6 ENM” grade appears on the front of the label, with the following sub grades on the back: Corner 5, Edge 7, Surface 6 and Center 8.5. A ding to the upper left corner and wear to the lower right corner are to note. Also present in an ACA holder is an apparent EX+ card of the man who Gretzky took over from in terms of exciting NHL crowds, with Guy Lafleur boldly autographing it in black marker. Certified as authentic by ACA, the sig deservedly merited an autograph grade of “10 GEM”. As for the rest of the set, get this, each card is in a toploader and divided up by team and stored in a classic OPC hockey card cardboard “locker” that one could send away for. Presented to us as being complete, we won’t rearrange it numerically to confirm but have looked at each card, with the following summary. Cards appear rather uniform and to have been collected by one person who kept track by marking checklists and each team checklist, with EX+ and EX-MT examples looking to be the norm, with some better/worse but all in the same vicinity, save for a few exceptions. Howe and Hull (OC) are EX-MT, but the second-year Bossy card measures narrow and looks to have been trimmed down both sides. The only obvious/notable creases are in the Oilers, Jets and Whalers team logo/checklist cards...and the three checklists. Finally, four cards are actually Topps issues; #s 22-Zanussi, 138-Connor, 166-Hill and 255-Flyers Team (unmarked). Like we said at the top, somewhat different, but actually, the same as all ’79-80 gatherings – it’s famous rookie card #18 (Wayne)...and the rest.
*Subtle light scratches to the front of the ACA (Gretzky) holder are to note.
