One of the two complements to the 1961-62 Topps set here is crazy-cool, but we’ll save the goodies for later. We’re also fond of much of the cardboard, with Johnny Bucyk and three commons (EX-MT) joined by two dozen at EX or EX+. Bobby Hull and rookie cards of Rod Gilbert and Jean Ratelle are EX, with the (off-centered) latter very close to being miscut. Displaying similarly to Hull is Mikita, but a subtle light bend (name/puck area) can be felt but an actual crease cannot be detected, making assessment difficult. Other EX-or-better notables are 1-Watson, Hall, Worsley, Pilote, rookie cards of 4-D. Smith and 15-Kurtenbach and 63-Rangers Team. Shy of EX at VG-EX or VG-EX+ are 15 cards, (20-Bruins Team, 51-Howell), while 15 others (VG or VG+) include 2-Green RC, 18-Stapleton RC, 42-Black Hawks Team, 45-Harvey, 53-Bathgate and the (unmarked) checklist. Four commons have clear glue residue on the back, with 26-Fleming RC (tape stains) and 12-McKenney (pen marks) also with back damage. Mostly crease-free cards will be coming your way – read on about the nifty bonuses.
A triple-fold Esso schedule (corner/edge dings but no writing) is fittingly from the same ’61-62 season, as is a scarce Montreal Forum Original Six era un-used ticket. Research tells a neat story; the lowly Bruins outscored the Canadiens 5-2 in the November 2nd game, with former Hab André Pronovost scoring twice and rookie goalie Don Head making 40 saves for one of his only nine career wins (win #2) in his only NHL campaign. Beliveau didn’t play for Montreal and McKenney had a goal and two assists for Boston. For an 8:30 start on a Thursday night, the ticket has survived in crease-free condition, with two staple holes near the right end not very detracting in our eyes. Your eyes will enjoy this interesting gathering when it arrives.
