The date was February 24, 1982. The place was the old Memorial Auditorium in Buffalo, N.Y. The postmark on this amazing limited-edition Wayne Gretzky 1982 NHL single season goal scoring record signed Gateway cachet speaks volumes. The Great One blew past Phil Esposito’s record of 76 goals set in 1970-71 when he scored his 77th goal of the 1981-82 season against Sabres goalie Don Edwards, the first of three goals he scored in the final six and a half minutes of the game to lead the Edmonton Oilers to a 6-3 win. Wayne’s big bold blue ballpoint signature displays magnificent penmanship and serves as a worthy tribute to his astonishing accomplishment on his way to a 92-goal season, a record that stands to this day. “Gretzky” is spelled out in big blue letters within the matte on the left side of the framed display that features an 8x10 action shot of Gretzky above the cachet, which is number 1,500 in a limited edition of 2,000 according to the accompanying COA. A plaque at the bottom headlined “99” The Great One, Career Commemorative, states Wayne held 61 NHL records, including 2,857 regular season points, 215 points in a season, 50 hat tricks, 50 goals in 39 games, 15 100-point seasons, and his numerous awards. A magnificent display celebrating his 1982 single season goal scoring record.
