Named in honour of the famed NASA Apollo space program of the 1960s and serving as a farm team for the Montreal Canadiens from 1965 to 1969, the Houston Apollos played in the CPHL in two different stints, with the second a mere two seasons before folding in 1980-81. This rare Apollos goaltenders jersey (#1) hails from 1965-67, with the possibility of use from one or more of three netminders including Carl Wetzel (1965-66), Gerry Desjardins (1966-67) and Rogie Vachon (1966-67). With no labeling remaining and measuring-out to roughly a size 50, the durene knit sports a twill team crest with “Apollos” chain-stitched, with “1” sewn to the sleeves and verso in white-over-red layered tackle twill. A detailed LOA document will accompany this desirable rarity.
Exhibiting a number of large material runs over the front and sleeves, the team crest shows a bit of edge fraying, with the hem removed from each cuff and the material “rolled”. A few small rust-coloured stains are also visible along the collar, with no tie-string remaining. Photos from 1965-66 and 1966-67 show players wearing Apollos sweaters with non-footed “1” numerals over the sleeves matching the offered specimen, with footed sleeve numerals first appearing late in the 1966-67 season as evidenced by an image of Leo Thiffault from March of 1967. Additional images including Gary Monahan from January of 1968 as well as the 1968-69 Apollos team photo show players wearing footed “1” numerals. We should further note that based on the wear exhibited it is possible that the jersey was recycled and worn by more than one of the aforementioned goalies in regular and/or pre-season games and/or practices.
