Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Winter 2021
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 2/23/2021
This is the original miniature Grey Cup trophy that was presented to Tony Gabriel as a member of the 1972 champion Hamilton Tiger-Cats. It commemorates the first of two Grey Cups Gabriel claimed during his Hall of Fame playing career in the Canadian Football League. Big things come in little packages sometimes, and that's definitely the case with this distinctive and unique personal trophy that stands 4 5/8" tall overall. The silver cup itself stands 2 5/8" tall and measures approximately 3" across at its widest points. "PRESENTED BY HIS EXCELLENCY EARL GREY FOR THE AMATEUR RUGBY FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP OF CANADA" is stylishly engraved, with the Cup mounted to a black wooden base with an affixed plaque with "HAMILTON 1972" engraved beneath a raised CFL logo shield, with a second plaque with "TONY GABRIEL" engraved on the reverse. A signed LOA from Tony Gabriel will accompany.
Courted by the New York Giants following a standout college career with Syracuse, Gabriel ultimately signed a CFL contract to begin his pro career with his hometown Tiger-Cats. On December 3, 1972, Hamilton defeated the Saskatchewan Roughriders 13-10 in front of a partisan crowd at Ivor Wynne Stadium to claim the Grey Cup in Gabriel's sophomore season. The local tight end contributed three huge receptions to the Ti-Cats' final drive that led to Ian Sunter's winning field goal on the last play of the game. The trophy exhibits minor surface wear throughout, with the silver cup able to swivel on the base.
