Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Winter 2021
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 2/23/2021
Joining once again, in collaboration with the Montreal Canadiens, Classic Auctions is pleased to offer a large collection of artifacts and memorabilia from the storied club's comprehensive archives. A number of historic specimens direct from the famous team including unique displays that were once marvelously displayed in the hallowed Montreal Forum and later at the Bell Centre are available, with an endless array of legendary and monumental players featured that all proudly once donned the sacred jersey of the mighty Montreal Canadiens.
Captaining the Montreal Canadiens to back-to-back Stanley Cup championships in 1930 and 1931, Sylvio Mantha spent all but four games of his 14-season career with the Habs. The 1935-36 NHL season witnessed Mantha take on the role of player coach for the Canadiens, with this tenure lasting a mere single season. Originally displayed at the hallowed Montreal Forum and most likely later at the Bell Centre, we have a framed painting of the 1960 HOF inductee by noted Habs artist Michel Lapensee. At approx 11” x 15” and executed in water colours, Mantha is beautifully depicted, with his name and tenure listed on the matte. The artist has signed, adding the date (1992), with the work double-matted and framed to approx 19” x 23”. The unique painting is flawless, with some damage to the text on the matte and wear to the frame including a few blemishes. An LOA from Classic Auctions will be included.
