Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Winter 2021

Like many of his counterparts who skated on NHL rinks at a time when no hockey cards were being produced, Eddie Shore had played several seasons when he finally got to appear on a "rookie card", his 1933-34 OPC rookie here issued a year after the famous defenceman had been awarded his first of four Hart Memorial Trophies as league MVP. Card #3 describes the Saskatchewan native as "always a big threat on the attack" and "a rugged type of player and a great leader" but was erroneously identified as "#4" on the KSA label. The 5 EX grade given to this example is notably generous, with rounded corners and diagonal indentations at two corners, the latter evidence that the card was once held in an O-Pee-Chee album designed to hold the '33-34 cards, like the one here. With the original owner's name and writing on the front, the album's back cover informs that each page was cut to hold six cards on each side and the full 72-card set, referred to as "O-Pee-Chee Hockey Star Pictures." The firm hints "it is quite possible that we will add to this number later" (which is did in ensuing years) and that another album could be had for ten wrappers and seven cents - cool. We can tell that three pages once had cards inserted and three did not. Interesting pre-war collectibles to consider.
