Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Winter 2021
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 2/23/2021
A standout with four different NHL clubs during the 1930s and early-1940s including the Toronto Maple Leafs and single-season Brooklyn Americans, Gus Marker scored 133 career points and was crowned a Stanley Cup champion with the Montreal Maroons in 1935. This vintage referee’s wool sweater hails from Mr Marker’s personal collection, and it’s accompanied by a pair of items signed by HOF builder and OHA Secretary William A. Hewitt, including a letter addressed to Marker along with an OHA official’s card from the 1943-44 season. The beige sweater sports no labeling and features a black and orange collar, with an NHL crest placed over the left breast in the 1990s, for the sweater to be used in a game with throwback jerseys. The signed letter is on OHA letterhead and dated Nov 25, 1943, with the text mentioning the included OHA official’s card, signed in black ink. The card is 2 ½” x 4” with “Gus Marker” typed and the 1943-44 date added, with the dark ink Hewitt signature especially bold.
The sweater remains in gorgeous condition with just light overall wear present including a single small repair on the lower right sleeve, with the OHA card in beautiful near mint condition. The letter exhibits toning and some edge wear, with a single horizontal fold line and a pair of vertical examples.
