Donating the Dominion Hockey Challenge Cup to the nation as the sixth Governor General of Canada, Lord Stanley returned home to England in July of 1893 to become the 16th Earl of Derby following the death of his brother. Celebrating his appointment as Preston Guild Mayor in 1902, we have a great group of antique Lord Stanley items totaling eight. First, we have a desirable silver medallion with raised Lord and Lady Stanley images (2”), a smaller medallion with matching images (1 ¼” with hole added for suspension), a star-shaped gold-coloured pinback with Stanley image and a hard cover souvenir book for the 1902 Guild (5 ½” x 9”, with an image of Lord and Lady Stanley). The remaining items are all china, with a tea cup and saucer, mug and plate, with each item except the saucer featuring Lord Stanley’s image.
The tea cup and saucer show light wear, with a long hairline crack that has darkened visible on the cup, while the mug also sports a large crack and chip, with the handle broken off. The full-size plate is 9 ½” in diameter, with a few minor surface marks and a piece of tape added to the reverse. The 2” medallion shows just light handling wear, with heavier wear to the smaller medallion including the aforementioned hole. The book also shows just light wear including to the interior spine, with some minor toning to the interior pages.
