Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Fall 2020
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 10/20/2020
Making numerous appearances in Europe and North America and donned by two different players within three seasons, we have a well-traveled goal mask, with this attractive specimen first made for Mikael Tellqvist’s use during the 2010-11 KHL season with Dinamo Riga, with the mask later used by Kristers Gudlevskis both at the 2013 IIHF World Championships – where it has been photo-matched - and at training camp with the Tampa Bay Lightning. A Bauer model with custom paint job by mask artist David Gunnarsson, the cage, strapping, back plate and interior padding are intact, with Daveart stickers affixed to the interior and upper right, and Gunnarsson’s signature to the left of the forehead. Featuring a Riga paint scheme with “Telly” over the chin section, Gudlevskis added signatures over the top left and within the back plate. An LOA will accompany along with a signed photo of Gudlevskis (at Tampa Bay training camp) and memorabilia card of Tellqvist, with both pictured wearing the mask.
Showing heavy game-use as expected, there are numerous scratches, dings and marks visible throughout, with a large chip over the chin section and additional examples along edges. There is also wear to the interior padding and minor soiling beneath the mouth guard. An image of Tellqvist with Riga shows the sponsorship sticker that was originally over the forehead (others were affixed as well), with the residue still remaining. Getty Image #168745830 (2013 IIHF World Championships, May 14th vs Finland) has been matched to the series of three large chips along the bottom edge of the mask near the chin section, to the David Gunnarsson signature visible beneath the cage just above the left eye, to the Latin quote handwritten and visible on the left side of the back plate, and to additional chips along the left reverse edge. Getty Image #168411696 (2013 IIHF World Championships, May 9th vs Slovakia) has been matched to the series of three large chips along the bottom edge of the mask near the chin section, to the David Gunnarsson signature visible beneath the cage just above the left eye, and to the Latin quote handwritten and visible on the left side of the back plate.
