Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Fall 2020
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 10/20/2020
Relive the days of collecting on the schoolyard and trading with your friends as most of the cards found in this massive lot come from the years before the hobby boomed. With overall condition ranging from poor to excellent, there are prime examples of how cards were treated in an era where investing and keeping cards in prime condition was not on the minds of the people that bought them. They were instead after the sickening-sweet pink gum that we all miss today! This lot does feature plenty of near-sets and tons of star cards (including Hall of Famers like Gordie Howe, Bobby Orr, Ken Dryden, and more) and key rookies are included – but do not expect them to be worthy of being graded and slabbed by a third-party grader. You will find the unwitting victims of games of flipsies, plenty of scuffs and creases, or even a few pen marks, but that is to be expected based on the era that these cards were originally sold. Among the other highlights here are over 100 vintage Wayne Gretzky cards, many of which come from subsets like League Leaders and Record Breakers. You won’t find his rookie card in here, but it is a fantastic array of cards from his years with the Edmonton Oilers.
The O-Pee-Chee hockey card nostalgia starts in the 1969-70 season (19 cards) and continues along the line to the last pre-boom year, 1989-90 (220 cards). In between, the sets break down as follows: 1970-71 (600+, 70+ Deckle Edge inserts), 1971-72 (500+), 1972-73 (400+), 1973-74 (500+), 1974-75 (1200+), 1975-76 (800+), 1976-77 (800+), 1977-78 (approximately 3,000, 150+ Glossy inserts), 1978-79 (approximately 4,000), 1979-80 (approximately 3,000), 1980-81 (2,000+), 1981-82 (3,500+), 1982-83 (approximately 3,000), 1983-84 (1,500+), 1984-85 (approximately 600), 1985-86 (approximately 500), 1986-87 (100+), 1987-88 (200+), 1988-89 (approximately 200), and 1989-90 (200+). Look for more than 400 cards from O-Pee-Chee’s World Hockey Association sets as well. Cards from several Topps sets from this era are also included are there are more than 1,000 which come from sets released between 1973-74 to 1989-80. Also included in this lot is approximately 600 baseball cards (primarily O-Pee-Chee and Topps from 1970 to 1989), and small amount of basketball and football cards, and roughly 1,500 base hockey cards and inserts produced since 1990-91. For collectors of a certain age, this lot offers an incredible walk down memory lane and with a little digging and patience, there is a fair amount of break-up value. Most are in boxes, there are several near-sets and groups of cards in plastic sheets. This collection is sold as-is with the understanding that conditions vary greatly and there is no guarantee that any specific card will be included.
