Villeneuve’s rise to the top of the F1 world in the late-1990s saw him enjoy tremendous success with the 1997 Williams Renault and the 1998 Winfield Williams teams. Several items he wore during races in this era are included in this impressive collection. Highlights include a pair of signed Sparco race-worn gloves and two pairs of race-worn Sparco boots (one pair dual-signed) attributed to his 1996 or 1997 seasons. The rest of this collection includes nine pieces of Nomex racing underwear – including a balaclava and two pairs of socks. Three of these pieces are boldly signed in black ink! Originating from Jacques’ personal collection, a signed LOA will accompany.
The race-worn gloves are signed in black ink on each glove and show evidence of extensive use. The cuffs do have some pilling on the fabric and tags are present inside the left glove. The unsigned pair of blue suede Sparco boots display plenty of race use. The other pair exhibit some wear and are size 40. Tagging for both pairs is intact.
With the Puma balaclava, there is evidence of customization that was done in preparation for a long race. A hole was cut out where his mouth was in order to keep Villeneuve hydrated as he raced to the finish line. The original tag appears on the back of the neck area.
Villeneuve also signed two Nomex shirts that are part of this collection. The first is a Stand21 Racewear t-shirt which is autographed in black in on the front left near the neck. The bottom of the shirt does show plenty of evidence of use as much of the stitching has come out. There is also a Sparco racing turtleneck which was signed on the inside upper right. Please note that this piece does have one small hole near the left arm.
The assortment of off-white Nomex racing underwear includes one long set with Sparco tagging, a long Puma-branded set which is signed by Villeneuve on the left side near the neck, a Sparco ¾ length pair, and a pair of Sparco pyjama-style bottoms. All these pieces demonstrate evidence of wear and pilling.
Both pairs of socks have yellowed slightly with age and the elastic has started to lose some integrity, but tags are still present on each sock.
