Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Fall 2020
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 10/20/2020
When contemplating the greatest teams throughout the storied history of Canada’s national game, the Montreal Canadiens are not only the oldest professional hockey franchise in existence, they are also the most successful and famous, with countless legends proudly representing the iconic Bleu Blanc Rouge. Arguably the most historic and important team image in the entire sport, the genesis of hockey’s greatest club was spawned over a century ago by these eleven men pictured on this highly desirable photo of the inaugural season 1909-10 Montreal Canadiens. At approx 14 ½” x 18 ½” and produced sometime later, with a photo made of the original Albert Dumas cabinet photo affixed to a cardboard backing, the men who made history are all pictured including the team’s architect and leader Jack Laviolette, along with fellow Hall of Fame members Newsy Lalonde and Didier Pitre. The print shows a number of creases that existed before it was mounted to its current cardboard backing, with a few edge tears also present, with the print slightly separating at the top corners. The reverse exhibits toning along with a pencil notation. Utterly rare despite its historic status, this is only the second image we have ever offered of the first-season Habs, with the original team photo sold in 2012 fetching north of $5300.00. This example, ideal for display with a period appearance, will definitely fill the void for a number of collectors desperate to add the paramount image to their assemblages.
