Kicking off the New Year with a bang, the 2011 Winter Classic took place on the first day of January, with the afternoon-scheduled game held off until evening due to fears of heavy rain. Alexander Ovechkin’s Washington Capitals would invade the home territory of Sidney Crosby’s Pittsburgh Penguins, with the former pulling off the victory on the road, 3-1. This puck was used by superstar Evgeni Malkin to notch the 1st goal of the game, at 2:13 of the second (his 14th goal of the season), with Kris Letang and Marc-Andre Fleury assisting. Featuring a 2011 Winter Classic logo with NHL shield crest over the reverse, the puck exhibits light game use. A decal numbered “142074” has been affixed to the puck, with a matching NHL/MeiGray LOA to accompany along with a COR from MeiGray.
We should note that 13 pucks from the 2011 match (4 goal pucks and 9 game-used pucks) were handed directly from an on-ice official to an NHL/MeiGray Authentication Program director to be authenticated and labeled, including the offered example.
