Backstopping the Detroit Red Wings throughout much of the 1970s, Jim Rutherford also represented Canada twice at the World Championships. The 2019 Hall of Fame Builder won a trio of Stanley Cup championships after his playing days as an executive, and is currently the general manager of the Pittsburgh Penguins. This Red Wings jersey was worn by the Beeton native in 1977-78, his fifth season in Motor City. Laundering instructions are affixed to the collar, with a “52” size tag placed over a “7” year tag. Styled with the famous winged wheel team crest full embroidered, the vintage mesh has been accented with “1” over the sleeves and verso in single white twill, with "Rutherford" across the affixed nameplate in matching material. A garter style fight strap has also been utilized, with a patch from team supplier Olympic added over the inside hem.
Exhibiting nice game-use, there are a few marks over the front and sleeves, with small holes near the right cuff, reverse and left shoulder. Both cuffs have become somewhat unraveled, with the twill number bent over the left sleeve. We should also note the interesting provenance, as this jersey was acquired directly from Mr Rutherford by our consignor’s father.
