Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Winter 2020
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 2/26/2020
First appearing in the 1890s, Matryoshka, or “nesting” dolls, were usually given to young Russian women by their beloved. Originating from the collection of Alan Eagleson and hailing from the famous '72 Canada-Russia Series, these Russian nesting dolls, three of the various size wooden dolls, were given to Team Canada players by their Soviet counterparts prior to Game 4 of the series, played in Vancouver on September 8, 1972. A full-page colour photo of five Canadian players holding their dolls just after receiving them in the customary pre-game exchange of gifts is included in the classic "Twenty-Seven Days in September" book (page 67). Thin wooden two-piece affairs have vibrant colours, with the smallest standing 6", followed by one just over 7", and the largest, at 9". An LOA from Classic Auctions will accompany.
Regarding condition, we spot a 4” crack in the edge of the top half of the largest doll, and small half-inch cracks over the edges of the top half of each of the smaller dolls.
