The “Iron Man” of Hockey, Garry Unger set an NHL record of playing in 914 consecutive games over a ten-year period from 1968 to 1979, with this later surpassed by Doug Jarvis. Named the MVP at the 1974 NHL All-Star Game, Unger would previously compete in his second All-Star contest in 1973, the year the offered West Division All-Stars jersey was worn. The first year of the attractive orange All-Star jerseys and considered by collectors to be some of the most appealing ever produced, a Cosby label with “48” sizing is affixed to the collar, with an embroidered NHL shield crest dominating the chest, with the V-neck sporting additional shields over both breasts and shoulders. Each sleeve is also adorned with a white star adhered between the dual-colour striping bands, with another half dozen matching examples evenly spaced across the front and reverse lower band. “9” appears over the sleeves and verso in black-over-white tackle twill, with “Unger” placed directly over the upper reverse in individual letters.
We should note that with the inclusion of Pit Martin in the West Division All-Stars line-up in 1973, Unger wore the #9 jersey instead of his customary #7. Worn for just a single contest, the jersey remains in gorgeous original condition, with just a single dark mark over the left sleeve’s star.
