The sixth Prime Minister of Canada, Sir Charles Tupper, signed this 1863 Province of Nova Scotia military document. The last surviving Canadian father of Confederation, Tupper entered office as Canada’s sixth Prime Minister in 1896, succeeding Robert Borden and serving for just over two months. The Premier of Nova Scotia from 1864 to 1867, Tupper subsequently held multiple cabinet positions under Prime Minister Sir John A. Macdonald, including Minister of Customs (1873–74) and Minister of Public Works (1878–79). At 74, Tupper remains the oldest person ever to become Canadian prime minister. Succeeded by Wilfred Laurier after he was defeated in the 1896 election, his 68-day term is the shortest of all prime ministers.
Tupper’s large black fountain pen ink signature sits on the bottom right of this 8” x 12 3/4" original paper document issued “By his honor major general Charles Hastings Doyle, Administrator of the Government, and Commander-in-Chief in and over Her Majesty’s Province of Nova-Scotia, and its Dependencies, &c.&c&c” “Hastings Doyle” is signed beneath “Province of Nova Scotia” on the upper left of the document, which is dated September 18, 1863, and states that “Dana Friese Gent” is appointed to be Quarter Master in the Nova Scotia Militia. A seal is affixed to the upper edge to the right of the vertical fold crease in the middle, one of three such creases in the document, which displays expected aging.
